Wings

It was only moments ago when she was sipping at her coffee now she was scrambling to pick the pieces of her life up. Empty words spilled out of her mouth to form void sentences, but his hard eyes didn’t soften at them.

He didn’t realize that his quest for a midnight snack would lead to this. He had watched her tattoos peel off her skin. The wings were a blinding light at first but they started to fade to a dull grey. Now he couldn’t even look at his wife for too long as they were just getting brighter and brighter.

“I swear, I would have told you!”

“Do you think I’m an idiot, Lucille,” he spat. He shook his head. “What else are you hiding?”

“No! I promise! There is nothing else. I’m so sorry.” She reached for his hand only for it to be pulled away.

Their eyes locked. Her glimmering emerald eyes stared into his hard brown ones.

She grasped his hand and his eyes soften. A smirk tugged at the corner of her lips.

Tears spilled out of his eyes. “Sorry. Let’s…. Let’s  just talk this all out.”

She nodded.

Their conversation lasted for hours as they sat on the couch. Everything was fine, for now. She knew she had to be more careful. If he was to leave for days on end, heaven knows what would find him.

Her shoulders were sore from having to hold her wings in a strange position and from holding his weight. Light snores had been escaping his lips for hours, but she didn’t dare to let her guard down. Although it was slipping away all on it’s own. She had been keeping this up for almost a week.

Her feathers faded to grey and black crept up her fingers. In the blink of an eye, the color in her eyes is an emerald ring. She wrapped one of his dark locks around one of her clawed fingers.

“Goodnight angel.”
